Ila Quinn Trakel’s Jellyfish Earrings: Crochet Designer Interview

Inside – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Ila Quinn Trakel, who contributed the Jellyfish Earrings crochet pattern featured in our July 2024 issue.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?

I had the idea to design jellyfish earrings a few years ago! As any artist knows it is difficult to get through all of the ideas in your head! But when I read the call for designs from CF last winter I knew immediately that it would be perfect with the theme!

What were some challenges about designing this piece?

Honestly one of the hardest parts was making them small enough to be reasonable sizes earrings! Crochet grows fast, so I had to think about how to create a lot of texture fast!

What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?

The crown! I adore the colorwork and how it is worked in one piece, but looks like it is sitting on the jellyfishes head!

If you were to create a sibling piece to this one, what would it be?

Maybe octopus earrings! I love both and would adore the chance to create a series of small creatures!

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

I want people to make keychain decorations and backpack charms for their kids! I would absolutely melt if I ever saw one on someones rearview mirror.

What is your crochet origin story? How did you learn to crochet?

I learned to crochet when I was 5! I’m left handed so my sister had to sit across a table from me so I could mirror her crochet technique!

What is your dream crochet project?

I want to make a dramatic dress some day! And a duster length cardigan with bell sleeves!

What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?

The lemon peel stitch! It is so satisfying to stitch. I can get lost in it for hours!

Do you crochet only at home? If not, what experiences have you had crocheting in public?

Oh, I crochet everywhere! I am used to being watched at home anyway, and it’s fun to watch people get interested in what is happening! I think the most exciting part is finding people who want to learn how to crochet and getting to show them how joyful it is!
