Lena Skvagerson’s Vintage Preppy Striped Sweater: Crochet Designer Interview

Inside – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Lena Skvagerson, who contributed the Vintage Preppy Striped Sweater crochet pattern featured in our August 2024 issue.

What were some challenges about designing this piece?

Picking colors. I wanted a neutral background color so that was easy, but the contrasting color could really be so many options. I was looking at a dark blue for a classic look, or black as it would work well for my wardrobe, but then the mustard just makes such a pretty pop, so that’s what I finally ended up picking, but that said, now I also want a sweater in each of those other ones too.

What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?

The casual on trend look.

If you were to create a sibling piece to this one, what would it be?

Just a plain one without the stripes.

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

Choose different colors. Make it basic without stripes. Keep working around and around for the neck to give it a bigger collar.

What is your crochet origin story? How did you learn to crochet?

I was taught by my kindergarten teacher back in Sweden. In Sweden were I grew up it’s part of teaching credentials, and craft like knitting, sewing and crochet is a weekly 2 hour class from first to 9th grade.

Have you taught anyone else how to crochet?

I am beyond grateful to know I have taught so many people how to crochet. As an expert on PBS Tv-show “Knit and Crochet Now” for 7 seasons, I was able to reach a large audience, and also through the Blanket Clubs, both at Annie’s and Jimmy Beans Wool we have super detailed tutorial videos to go with each blanket project, and I have received a lot of feedback over the years, even from beginners, saying they made the blankets and learned so much. Music to my ears.

What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?

The star stitch. Ever since I first came across this stitch, I have just loved how easy it is and yet brings such an amazing cute texture to any projects.

Do you crochet more for yourself or for others?

I crochet mainly for work. I live and breathe my work, so there’s rarely ever any time for me to make something for myself or my family. If ever then it would be a beanie or a headband or something really small and quick.

What project are you most proud of?

All my blanket club blankets. They are so intricate, and include so many textures, some up to 50 different ones. I poured my heart into them.

How often do you crochet?

Pretty much every day.

Where is the weirdest place you’ve ever crocheted? The best place?

Weirdest is maybe at the gym while walking on a treadmill, the best will forever and ever be the beach.

Do you have a favorite hook size or brand?

Hooks size H 5mm for sure, not loyal to any brands.

What are a couple of fun facts about you?

I am a grandmother, I was a basketball coach for 10 years back in Sweden, I made my first knitted sweater collection when I was 15.

Do you do any other crafts? How do they compare to crochet?

I also knit and sew, embroider and also done some quilting. Love anything craft, and happy to be able to alternate.
