Natalia Pleshko’s Lacy and Short Skirt: Crochet Designer Interview

Inside – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Natalia Pleshko, who contributed the Lacy and Short Skirt crochet pattern featured in our July 2024 issue.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?

Ocean beach with seashells on the shore started the idea for this design. I wanted to create something light and airy, a fun piece to pack for your next beach vacation and a skirt rang the bell right away. The seashells were an inspiration to choose a shell-like stitch pattern.

What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?

Changing the stitch patterns toward the hem in a way, that every subsequent stitch pattern has more stitches in every repeat. The circumference of the skirt is growing without realizing that you’re increasing.

If you were to create a sibling piece to this one, what would it be?

I think a matching top would be a great addition. I already added this to the styling ideas, that you can wear this skirt as a top.

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

It will be easy to customize the length of the skirt, and the pattern already has directions for this. Also, you can add some beads or small shells to the waist cord, or add small tassels to the hem.

What is your crochet origin story? How did you learn to crochet?

I was already an avid knitter when in about 2005 I started exploring some online craft communities and found that crocheting is much more interesting than just dollies or blankets (this is how I associated crochet before) and decided that I needed to learn this craft too. In the pre-YouTube era books and a few magazines were my teachers.

What was your first crochet project? Where is it now?

It was a poncho, made with motifs. I found a crochet chart somewhere online and practiced my stitches with it. Still have the poncho in my closet, not wearing much, but I do have it.

Have you taught anyone else how to crochet?

Yes, I taught my boys. They don’t crochet on their own, but once in a blue moon they can make a little something if I’m helping. I also taught a couple of classes at the local yarn store for beginners, and to help with specific patterns.

Do you crochet only at home? If not, what experiences have you had crocheting in public?

I craft everywhere I can, always on the go with project bags. I have only positive experiences with the public reactions, some asking what I’m making, or how fast I can finish something, and some telling me that their grandma/aunt/mom also crochet.

How can people find you online?
