Smitha Crasta Meshy Dress : Crochet Designer Interview

Inside – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Smitha Crasta, who contributed the Meshy Dress crochet pattern featured in our July 2024 issue.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?

Summer dresses are my favorite to design. I wanted to work up a quick garment with double and triple crochet creating a mesh-like fabric. A breezy summer dress which would work great as a crop top, a dress and a cover-up. Thus Meshy dress was born.

What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?

I adore the bell sleeves. Most of my designs feature statement sleeves though not as huge as those of Cressida Cowper.

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

Each treble row adds one inch. The dress will increase in length due to the weight factor. Make sure to block, wear and measure as you go if you wish to add or subtract the length.

I would love to see a crop-top and a maxi version.

What is your dream crochet project?

A deep v-neck in the front, backless and high slit party wear dress with bling. The project has been on the back burner for three years.

What are some of your favorite tips and tricks?

Never frog when sleepy. Never recount when drowsy. Pick up the project the next morning, and more often than not you will find the WIP is perfect.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever made?

A nose sweater for my sensitive nose. I did not know it was called a nose warmer until later.

What is your crochet super power?

Writing up a pattern with just a swatch. I crochet the sample when the pattern is ready!

Do you have a favorite hook size or brand?

I love Furls Odyssey and Tulips.
