Zara Powter’s Scripturient Scarf: Crochet Designer Interview

Inside – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Zara Powter, who contributed the Scripturient Scarf crochet pattern featured in our August 2024 issue.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?

I was inspired by staying cosy while on campus, and studying in style. As days cool down and school goes back into session, I wanted to create a piece that channeled comfort and cosiness without sacrificing style.

How can our readers find you on social media?

I am on Instagram, Pinterest, and Ravelry with the username LilyPurlDesign

What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?

I love how even though it is simple, the stitch and yarn combine to create a wearable, fun accessory. Your friends and family will never believe how easy it is to handmake!

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

I’d love to see scarves of all shapes and sizes. The pattern is so easy to customise; you could make an infinity scarf/cowl, a long thin scarf, a thicker shorter one, the possibilities are endless!

What is your dream crochet project?

I love learning new crochet stitches, and really want to explore more in the world of crochet cables. I’d love to design a cabled sweater that looks like a luxury, store-bought knitwear!

What was your first crochet project? Where is it now?

My first crochet project was a purple scarf made entirely from chains. It was pretty, but not the warmest for chilly days!

What is the most important thing you would want someone who’s just starting out to know?

Keep going! When you are first starting, it can seem overwhelming and easier to give up, but I promise that the reward of making something with your own hands to wear is infinitely worth it! Also don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone; often picking difficult patterns and stitches is the best way to learn more about crochet.

How often do you crochet?

Whenever I have time! I find during periods of high stress it helps me to refocus and have balance in the evenings, even with just a few rows a night.
