Priscilla Mitchell’s Flower Power Mandala Tote Bag: Crochet Designer Interview

Intro – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Priscilla Mitchell, who contributed the Flower Power Mandala Tote Bag crochet pattern featured in our March 2024 issue.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?

I have a background in henna art, so I’ve been drawing mandalas for years. I love how each round of a mandala can be interesting and unique, just like crocheting in the round. I wanted to design a crochet item that is interesting to look at and practical for everyday life.

What were some challenges about designing this piece?

The main challenge I had was making sure that the mandala laid FLAT, haha. Crocheting in the round with just one stitch over again, while doing the same increase each row is easy compared to making each row with different varying heights and stitches!

If you were to create a sibling piece to this one, what would it be?

I would 100% create a bandana to match! I love crochet bandanas! I feel like they are the perfect accessory.

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

I hope that the creators of this piece will have fun with different color combinations! The possibilities are endless, and I hope they use colors that bring them joy.

What is your dream crochet project?

One of my many crochet dream projects in a wedding dress! I would love to start creating wedding dress patterns that are size inclusive + made to measure. I didn’t have the time to crochet my own, but I love to give other creators the opportunity to do that.

What is your crochet super power?

I crochet VERY fast. If you view my videos on my social media, you’ll see what I’m talking about!

What are a couple of fun facts about you?

I live in a camper, which is a whole interview on its own, hahaha, and I also want to get a van to be my crochet office and future traveling vehicle!

Anything else you’d like to add? Anything else we should know?

I’m going to start creating my own colorful yarn cakes to sell, and I’m going to start spinning my own yarn as well. This is the next step I want to take in my fiber art journey and I am SO excited!

How can our readers find you on social media?

I have accounts on Facebook, Pinterest + YouTube: The Stitch Queen Crochet, and Tik Tok and Instagram: @thestitchqueencrochet. I post all kinds of content from funny and relatable to tutorials!
