What Is a Signature Style and Why Should You Find Yours?

We all have our own style, some are more obvious than others, but it’s there. In this series we look at how we can identify and develop our style so we can use that in our yarn creations.

Some may say that you can’t force or fake a style. While that holds a lot of truth, what you can do is investigate and study your artistic preferences, find the style you already have, and intentionally develop your signature style from there.

A yarnist’s style doesn’t have to encompass every aspect of their work. It may be the kinds of yarn used, color palette, shapes, themes, or more. It could be just one of these items, or a combination.

Your signature style can elevate you from someone who knits or crochets things, to an artist whose medium is yarn. Yes, even those making finished items from existing patterns can have and show their own style with which patterns they choose and even some simple modifications such as changing the colors and color layout, or switching up the stitch pattern.

We’re going to walk through discovering and developing your own signature style. For some people this will go pretty fast, and for others it may take some time. It depends on how much your style has already developed along with other factors that aren’t really measurable (art doesn’t always play well with rules).

Through the next 11 lessons there will be slideshows with me talking over them. Beneath each slideshow will be the notes for that lesson, including any links that I think may be helpful. Most lessons also have worksheets that can be downloaded beneath the notes. You can ask questions and discuss this section in the Showstopper Creations Community.

You can print out the worksheets that go with most of the lessons, or you can use a journal of your own. I recommend a journal or at least getting a binder for the worksheets so you can easily keep track of everything for reference. I have made each worksheet so there should be enough margin on the sides to allow room for hole punching. You may find you need to print multiples of some of the worksheets.
