Cristina Diaz’s Buttoned Up Preppy Crop: Crochet Designer Interview

Inside – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Cristina Diaz, who contributed the Buttoned Up Preppy Crop crochet pattern featured in our August 2024 issue.

If you were to create a sibling piece to this one, what would it be?

Since I am also a knitting designer, I would like to think about a similar piece for knitters. The main challenge will be to find a knitting lace pattern to match the crochet one.

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

This garment can be easily adapted “as-you-go”, modifying the bust size by adapting the number of rows of the body parts and the length doing the same in the hem.

What was the easiest or hardest part about the learning process?

Keeping the correct number of stitches along the rows/rounds. This is especially tricky when you work the same st across. Thus, sometimes it is easier for beginners to start with a simple pattern that will facilitate sts counting.

Is there anything you’d like to learn how to make?

Tunisian crochet. I have tried a couple of times, but I have a lot to learn.

What are some of your favorite tips and tricks?

I always have a crochet and a knitting project WIP. Changing techniques help me to reduce strain in my hands and wrists.

What benefits has crochet brought into your life?

It is one of my mindful activities. The rhythmic motions of looping yarn and pulling it through relax my mind and help me focus on the present, both key aspects of mindfulness.
