Intro – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Natalia Pleshko, who contributed the Rolling Waves Skirt crochet pattern featured in our January 2025 issue.
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
The theme of this month is Color Block with a Touch of Neon. I wanted to bring color blocks slightly outside the typical blocks. The idea of waves came to mind, and I found a perfect stitch pattern, that shows enough of the colors and gives flexibility to choose different color combinations.
The Rolling Waves Skirt works sideways, and the idea to work that way originated out of the Wave stitch pattern itself and alternating stripes of different colors. In my opinion, if the skirt has stripes along the body and not across, it is visually more flattering for any body type.
What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?
There are two parts, that I especially like. First, the skirt works in sections, as you establish your routine in each section, you just repeat it over and over again. Second, the short row parts perfectly fit into the Wave stripes even though they are made to create A-line shape skirt.
What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?
I would like to see different color combinations. And the different lengths, the pattern includes instructions on what to do, if you would like to lengthen the skirt.
Is there anything you’d like to learn how to make?
Probably there is, but I don’t know now. It’s more about technique for me, than a specific type of project. If something interesting catches my eye, and I can say to myself ‘I have no idea how this was made’, I’ll dive in and learn.
What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?
I like Corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet, it’s interesting that if you need to go up in the project, you need to work diagonally. Also great for creating pixel graphs blankets.
What are the smallest and largest items you’ve ever crocheted?
The largest is a big blanket, and the smallest tiny amigurumi.
How often do you crochet?
I’m also a knitter, and always alternate projects between knitting and crochet, but in general, I do craft every day.
Do you have a favorite hook size or brand?
I love Clover Amour hook, often work with size H/5mm, or 7/4.5mm
