January’s Giving Theme
January 4th is World Braille Day, so our January 2025 giving theme is art for and/or by the visually impaired. We are spotlighting 2 organizations.
The first is, of course, The Braille Institute. I found a section of their site that is perfect for us:
Visual Arts & Accessibility has been designed for two major audiences (which may overlap):
- Individuals with visual impairments who seek to learn more about visual arts and accessible art history. This course also provides information on key art terminology, online resources, and online organizations that support accessible art experiences for the blind and visually impaired.
- Professionals in arts fields who are seeking to better understand the BVI (blind, visually impaired) experience and improve accessibility in their museums, galleries, and educational programming.
Next is the Envision Arts Gallery and Community Engagement Center. Their mission is to empower these amazing individuals (artists and audiences who are blind, visually impaired and/or disabled) to exhibit, perform and engage our community through an accessible, diverse, and inclusive space for the arts.

Sand Timer Tunic by Joanne Fowler
This tunic is inspired by a sand timer shape, creating a bold, color-blocked look that works as an easy to wear outer garment for woodland walks or lazing at home. I love the way ponchos are quick and easy to throw on without bunching up sleeves, full skirts etc. and don’t need buttoning up like a coat. But they can catch on everything and blow around in windy weather, so I sought to design something similar but secure at the waist to prevent that.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Sizes: Designed to be worn with 2” / 5cm positive ease at the waistline (A).
- Waist Circumference: 29 (33, 37, 41) [46, 50, 54] (59, 63, 67) in / 73.5 (84, 94, 104) [117, 127, 137] (150, 160, 170) cm
- Chest Circumference: 32 (36, 40, 46) [50, 54, 58] (62, 68, 72) in / 81.5 (91.5, 101.5, 117) [127, 137, 147] (157, 173, 183) cm
Yarn: Cascade 220: (100% Peruvian Highland Wool), size 4, 220yds/200m, 3.5oz/100g per skein
- MC: Concord Grape 9570: 4 (5, 6, 7) [8, 8, 9] (9, 10, 10) skeins / 850 (1000, 1200, 1450) [1600, 1700, 1800] (1950, 2050, 2100) yds / 775 (915, 1095, 1325) [1465, 1555, 1645] (1785, 1875, 1920) m
- CC1: Harbor Mist 1050: 1 (1, 1, 1) [2, 2, 2] (2, 2, 2) skeins / 125 (150, 175, 200) [225, 225, 250] (250, 275, 300)yds / 115 (135, 160, 185) [205, 205, 230] (230, 250, 275) m
- CC2: Lapis Heather 9689: 3 (4, 4, 4) [4, 5, 5] (5, 5, 5) skeins / 650 (700, 750, 800) [850, 885, 925] (975, 1025, 1050) yds / 595 (640, 685, 730) [775, 815, 845] (890, 935, 960) m
Hook: I/9 (5.5mm) hook (or size needed to match gauge)
Gauge: In Alpine Stitch worked both in the round and flat (See Gauge Instructions)
Note: Row gauge is different for sleeves because the weight and stitch direction can pull on the Alpine stitch fabric, making it somewhat longer. This gauge difference could be less noticeable in smaller sizes from the range and more noticeable in larger sizes.
14 sts = 4 in / 10 cm; 14 rows = 4 in / 10 cm after blocking, for Peplum and Bodice, where rows are vertical
14 sts = 4 in / 10 cm; 12 rows = 4 in / 10 cm after blocking, for sleeves, where rows are horizontal
Single Crochet Swatch in the round (see Gauge Instructions) measures 4 in / 10 cm tall and 4 in / 10 cm in circumference after blocking.
Notions
- Tapestry Needle
- Removable Stitch Markers (2)
- Pins or extra removable stitch markers to hold pieces during seaming

Whirl Skirt by Joanne Fowler
Bold colors used as an accent are perfect for showing movement in ruffles, like the ones on the split of this skirt. I created this garment for layering over warm leggings and a long-sleeved t-shirt in winter, and carried forward into other seasons with lighter weight, neutral undergarments or even swimwear.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Sizes: Note: The skirt width is sized for your largest lower body circumference measurement. This might be around your hips, stomach, or elsewhere, depending on your figure shape. The pattern can easily be adapted for a better fit for your exact size (see customization section). The waistband will stretch to the same length to go over your hips and is cinched with a cord.
Designed to be worn with 2” / 5cm positive ease.

A look into the art of Carol MacDonald
Early exposure to knitting left artist Carol MacDonald feeling frustrated, but when she returned to fiber crafts later as a practiced printmaker, a world of artistic possibilities opened up.
The meditative rhythm of knit fabric pairs beautifully with printmaking, which emphasizes and illuminates the fine texture of fibers. Carol combines these two artistic pursuits to create exciting prints that appeal to crafters and art lovers alike.
