Jess Bennett’s Leaves Scarf: Crochet Designer Interview

Intro – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Jess Bennett, who contributed the Leaves Scarf crochet pattern featured in our November 2024 issue.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?

I wanted to create a simple, meditative make with just enough changes to keep you interested but not so many that you would need to keep checking back to the pattern. With the bonus of very few ends to weave in! I love creating new designs out of classic stitch patterns so with a few embellishments these millstone stitches became leaves.

If you were to create a sibling piece to this one, what would it be?

I think some simple wrist warmers would look great. You could make a smaller rectangle using the same technique as the scarf and join at the sides.

What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?

A cowl or an infinity scarf would look great.

What was the easiest or hardest part about the learning process?

I love coming up with ideas and working them up but I find grading a pattern really difficult. I’m not very good at maths so I have to check all my calculations, which takes me forever!

What benefits has crochet brought into your life?

So many! It allows me to be creative. As crochet is easy to pick up and put down, I can fit it around my job and looking after my children. I’ve met some really nice people through crochet, in real life and online. I think it helps me feel grounded and calm.

What other supplies do you use when crocheting?

Crochet is great because you don’t need much, just a hook and some yarn really. I also regularly use scissors and a tapestry needle.

How can our readers find you on social media?
