Intro – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Kat Witherall, who contributed the Susan’s Shopper crochet pattern featured in our Fall 2025 issue.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
I called this bag ‘Susan’s Shopper’ because the design was created for a lady called Susan. One of my students was really keen to make a bag, so I decided to create a simple beginner friendly mosaic pattern, so that it make a great learning experience as well as striking outcome.
What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?
I love doing mosaic in a round, it means no ends to hide or sew in once you finish your work and because each round only takes minutes, your work will grow fast, and it motives you to keep going! Only one more round? Sounds familiar?
What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?
There are so many customizations available for this design, from playing with colors to adjusting the size or adding pockets, lining and zips. I am looking forward to seeing all of them!

What is your crochet origin story? How did you learn to crochet?
I am not sure, but I may have been born holding a crochet hook! I cannot remember the learning process at all because I was so young, and it was all part of learning everything at that age. I just know my grandma, who was a kindergarten art teacher, taught all of her grandchildren and we all still crochet or knit regularly!
What is your dream crochet project?
I wish I had enough time to make all sorts of different blankets! There are so many beautiful designs out there to choose from.
Have you taught anyone else how to crochet?
Yes, I teach crochet at a local college as an evening class for adults and got plenty of people hooked to this amazing craft.

How often do you crochet?
Every chance I get. I always have one of my projects nearby and even if I have few minutes, I will do couple of stitches. I do have to take breaks when I have longer sessions, mainly to avoid repetitive strain injury.
What is your crochet superpower?
In order to become a better crochet teacher, I taught myself to crochet left-handed, so now I can crochet both right-handed and left-handed.
