Today we’re talking to crochet designer Sandra Regev, who contributed the Geometric Coasters crochet pattern featured in our October 2024 issue.
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
The Netflix series Yellowstone- I loved the colors textures and atmosphere and it inspired me to create the Geometric
coasters.
What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?
I love the color combination of this piece and the endless options it gives crocheters – Easily can become a place mat or a table runner.
What is your crochet origin story? How did you learn to crochet?
I learn to crochet at the age of 7. My mother taught me to crochet and knit. We lived in Argentina and both my grandmothers crocheted. One was from Turkey and one was from Russia so I have a mixed cultural background.
What was your first crochet project? Where is it now?
My first crochet project was a Dolly- no idea where it is now, but later on when I was 18 and served in the IDF I crocheted a curtain using Filet crochet and it is kept in my closet. 🙂
Have you taught anyone else how to crochet?
Yes, I tried to teach my 3 daughters but none showed interest. For the last few years I teach groups of people with severe mental health issues.
What is the most important thing you would want someone who’s just starting out to know?
When starting crochet you need patience. It takes time to find the rhythm of your hands.
What benefits has crochet brought into your life?
So many benefits! I make much better decisions, I can think clearly, I have a small biz now that brings so much joy.
What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?
I love the V stitch and all its combinations.
How often do you crochet?
I crochet daily- first thing in the morning for about half an hour and in the evenings for at least 2 hours.
What do you drink while crocheting?
I am a water drinker and herbal tea but mostly water.
Where/how do you find your inspiration?
Mostly on cooking accounts- I love to get ideas for a new “omelet” (hat, beanie….).
If you were stranded on a desert island, what would you crochet first?
A cotton blanket to sit on- I hate the feeling of sand on me.
What do you binge watch while stitching?
True Crime series on any platform. I need a good story.
