Intro – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Zara Powter, who contributed the Latte Vest crochet pattern featured in our November 2024 issue.
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
This design was inspired by all things cozy! I wanted to create a design that embodied the Fall aesthetic; cute coffee shops, libraries, falling leaves. I love Fall because it reminds us to slow down, something very closely connected with craft which for me is a daily reminder to take a break. I wanted to make a relaxing, rhythmic piece that is calming and Autumnal. I’ve also been inspired lately by all of the comfy vests popping up on my feed. There are so many fun ways to style a vest and it’s perfect for layering in the in between seasons! I also love drape, and the combination of the larger hook, merino yarn and looser stitch pattern really gives it a lovely flow that can be hard to achieve with crochet.
What’s your favorite aspect of this piece?
I love the folded collar, it makes me feel so cozy and warm! The yarn is really soft and warm so it feels super nice, and it’s relaxed so it’s not hugging my throat. I’m really pleased with that design element!
What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?
This vest is the perfect base pattern and super easy to customise. I would love to see variations in length, i think it would be super cute cropped without the side splits. I also think it would be interesting to see it with button closures at the side instead of seaming. If you’re not a fan of high necklines, I think it would also look fabulous with a boat neck instead.
What was your first crochet project? Where is it now?
My first crochet sweater was actually a Watermelon Jumper from a crochet magazine I borrowed from the library. It looked super cute and was made in a light cotton which had amazing drape. However, I tried to make mine with acrylic and started adjusting the pattern partway through so it didn’t come out quite the same. When I finished it looked so different to what I was expecting and I don’t think I ever wore it!
What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?
I love Moss Stitch because it has so much drape! Because crochet stitches tend to be thicker than knit ones, it can be hard to get that perfect drape, and the openness of moss stitch allows the stitches to flow really beautifully.
Do you crochet only at home? If not, what experiences have you had crocheting in public?
I love crocheting in public! I’ll often pull out a project on a train or bus ride or sitting at the library. I’ve never been asked about it and most people are too involved in their own world to notice, so definitely don’t be afraid to get some extra stitches in! I know some people craft while walking, but I’m yet to try that out!
