Intro – Today we’re talking to crochet designer Zara Powter, who contributed the Snowglobe Sweater crochet pattern featured in our December 2024 issue.
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
This design was inspired by early snowfall and snuggling up in a cozy cabin. I wanted to create a jumper that was extra warm and cosy but also stylish and fun to be worn for all Wintry escapades. I was inspired by big, oversized statement pieces to create a sweater that would stand out and look stunning!
What sort of customizations are you hoping creators will make when they crochet this piece?
I wanted to make this design really customisable, and I would love to see other makers’ creativity with this sweater! I think it would look super cute as a cropped pullover, or even a vest if the sleeves were omitted. I think you can also get really creative with the sleeve closure, instead of pompoms I’d love to see pretty ribbon or lace.
What caught your interest about crochet?
I love being able to make my own clothes, I think its so fun that I can create garments that are my own designs and handiwork. I also love how crochet is slow fashion which promotes sustainability and slow living, something that is hard with all of the demands of today’s world.
What benefits has crochet brought into your life?
Crochet has so many amazing benefits! It’s great for mental health, it is super calming and rhythmic and always helps me relax. It also helps me to be more sustainable as I really think about how long it has taken me to make and the fibers that I choose to work with and I love how it promotes slow fashion. Crochet is a great way to connect, I love meeting other makers and forming new relationships over craft!
Do you do any other crafts? How do they compare to crochet?
I love crafting, I have tried many different ones including embroidery, knitting, sewing, and cross stitching. I think it’s really fun to combine crafts, and in the future I would love to make more pieces that use different mediums and crafts together!
